Thanks to all our patrons for a fantastic summer program! We had hundreds of children sign up for the reading challenge, and all of our activities were hoppin’.
Our Summer Reading Program is over as of August 9th, 2013. Regular programing will begin again in the fall. Please check our main website frequently for updates on when storytimes, clubs, and other activities will resume. Additionally, we have a summer re-cap post with a huge gallery of all our programs this past summer! Our last non-party activity of the summer was a hit with our young patrons! Mr. Evan put on a one-man puppet show of Janet Stevens’ picture book Tops & Bottoms. Prior to the show, Mr. Evan also invited children up “on stage” to perform in a live-action version of The Enormous Potato. What a great way to end our summer activities!
Don’t forget about our Thursday party at 1:30 starring Lindsay and her Puppet Pals, as well as ice cream from Moo’s and lots of fun activities!
34 children joined the fun as we began our first LEGO club yesterday! Kids used creativity and imagination to bring their creations to life using lots and lots of bricks and pieces. It should be mentioned that ALL of our LEGOs and Mega Bloks were donated by generous patrons. Thanks to them our club could take flight!
There were thousands of pieces on hand for kids ages 3-11 to sort through. They were given complete reign over what they wanted to build within the hour we had for the program. Our participants came up with some amazing things! You can see the results in the slideshow below, but make sure to stop by the Children’s Area to see their creations on display all month long.
We had a fantastic time at the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party! Children ages 4-11 enjoyed following the clues to complete a Chesire cat puzzle, compete in a costume contest, play wacky flamingo croquet, and of course, enjoy “tea” and snacks! Mr. Evan’s giant hat held colorful keys that led to tiny doors…we even had a rabbit hole! Check out the photos below to see the fun we had!
On Tuesday, July 23rd the children of Derry were treated to an exciting talk about Ancient Egypt by amateur Egyptologist Paulette Morin. Morin, who also gives professional tours of Egypt during summers and who has created her own documentary-style video on Egypt for children, brought to the library loads of cool statues, jewelry, wigs, and jars.
Paulette Morin describing an anklet to an engaged audience.
She brought many children up to the front to try on some amazing jewelery, and then got everyone up and dancing to Egyptian music! See below for our slideshow:
Lions and tigers and … monkeys? Oh, my!
That’s right, folks! Last night was our Jumanji Carnival party, and boy did we have fun. Mr. Evan read portions of Chris Van Allsburg’s magical tale about two bored children looking for a little excitement (hm…I’m sure we all know some kids like that, especially during summer). Of course, the children in the book get more excitement than they bargained for!
We turned the Children’s Room into a Jumanji-themed carnival last night! Kids rolled a die to see which game they would play first (Elephant Stompers? Snake Belly Crawl? Coconut Bowling?), and once they finished all the activities they were permitted to enter the Golden City, just like in the book! We had a fantastic time. Please enjoy the Jumanji slideshow below!
Raiders of the Lost Library!
Find out what’s going on in the library this summer.
Eek! We experienced a shark attack on June 28th! Kids played shark games and then made a cute (I mean ferocious!) shark puppet.
We had a great time at our Madeline program! Miss Kathy read two different Madeline stories, and then everyone settled in to make their Madeline puppets.
We had a great turnout for the first meeting of summer chess club. Keep up the good work, all!
Magician Mike Bent kept us giggling and guffawing as he performed magic tricks and told stories.
Looking for a great way to spend your Tuesday afternoon? Come to a hilarious (FREE!) magic show at the Derry Public Library on Tuesday, June 25th with Boston magician Mike Bent! This year’s show is the apty-titled “Raiders of the Lost Book,” and he uses comedy, storytelling, puppets, and magic to tell the tale of an overdue library book.
This event will be great fun for all ages! Join us on June 25th at 2:30 pm, and bring a friend!
Information about Nickelodeon Award-winning magician Mike Bent can be found at his website: Mike Bent Programs
We hope to see you there!
Today is the first day of our 2013 Summer Reading Program! As you can see, our theme this year is Dig Into Reading: Raiders of the Lost Library! We’ve turned the Children’s Room into an ancient Egyptian tomb. Come visit us to see all of the spectacular artwork, learn about mummies and pharaohs in our Egyptian museum, and pick up your reading log while you’re here. Questions? Let us know! We can’t wait to see you all and begin this fantastic adventure!
